They left Dillon Park and headed to the Cook County Court warehouse on 31st Street in Chicago. The evidence in the Taggart case had been transferred to the warehouse after the trial.

The file clerk punched a few keys and a detailed listing appeared on the monitor. “What’s the case number?” Sophie asked.

Frank replied, “1191.” He lifted the lid on a candy jar and peered in. Turning a peppermint pattie over, he read the ingredients. “Corn syrup, cocoa butter, lactose, soya lecithin.”

“You’re spending way too much time in the gym.” Jake’s eyes dragged down Frank’s frame. He was wearing a dark brown suede sportscoat, pants, and matching shirt, tie, even suede shoes. “Funny you never read the ingredients of the desserts Abby makes.”

“I tell myself they’re all natural. Gotta be the way they taste.” Frank checked his tie and pants. “You’ve been checking me out all morning, Jake. Don’t tell me I’m starting to look good to you.”

“Actually, I was thinking how much you look like a Fudgsicle.”

“Fudgsicle?” Frank checked his reflection in a mirrored door.

“You look good enough to eat to me,” Sophie said with a wink. She laughed boisterously, her flesh swaying under the sack dress as she sashayed into the back room.

Frank lowered his voice to a whisper. “Remind me never to wear this outfit again.” He tossed the peppermint pattie back into the candy jar. “How does Sam think Lonnie fits in?”

Jake had called Sam after their visit to Dillon’s Sporting Goods and relayed the information that Lonnie had worked at Dillon’s for one week.

“She’s got the same impression. Lonnie read about the murder and the description of the murder weapon, could I.D. the killer, and blackmailed him.”

“So why bleed the blackmailer for more money after all these years?”

“Good question.” Jake’s phone chirped. He pulled it from his pocket and flipped it open. He listened for several seconds, then said, “No. I don’t have time for that. Tell her anything.” He snapped the phone shut and slipped it in his pocket.

“Let me guess. Thigh high skirt and perky breasts.”

“I don’t care how high her skirt goes or where the perks point. She is still the press and the last person we need to talk to. Maybe I’ll have Janet give her your number.”

“Thanks, but no thanks.”

Sophie returned and set a box on the counter. “What do you need out of here?”

“Copy of the Evidence Log for starters,” Frank said. He took the box from her. While Sophie made the copy, they sifted through the contents. “Here’s the knife.” Jake lifted it out of the box. It was still caked in blood, the pearl handle smudged. He turned the knife blade down and read the stock number, “19389.”
